The individual.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

-Friedrich Nietzsche
German philosopher (1844 – 1900)

Be yourself. Even if it is tough. Be yourself.

  1. But resisting being owned by the tribe (nation, church, business, whatever) doesn’t necessarily mean being lonely. Communities (of friends, of people who share a commitment) are not necessarily tribes. I’m also uncertain about “owning” myself. No-one else owns me, that’s for sure, but I don’t really want to “own” myself. Maybe the translation from the German loses something.
